Problems installing - doc not working
Posted by Michael on Oct-19-2009 01:49
I just downloaded and unzipped the PHP version of ChartDirector on Windows.  I'm assuming that you just copy it to a directory to start with.  As far as "installing" the package goes, I was looking for a setup file or something similar.  After that, I opened the documentation in the .chm file in the doc folder, but when I click on a topic to display, there is an error:  "The address is not valid - Most likely causes: There might be a typing error in the address.  If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date."

What do I need to do to allow the documentation to work?  I assume I'll see how to install the software in there.

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Have you unblocked the CHM?

Note that if you download a CHM from Internet, the Windows OS may require you to unblock the CHM first before you can view it. This is the same for all CHM that was downloaded from the Internet.

To unblock a CHM file, please click on the file, select Properties, and select "Unblock". (See Microsoft knowledge base http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902225/ for more
information.)

Please also note the followings.

(a) Make sure the CHM is a file on your local hard disk drive (eg. "C:" drive). Do not put it on a network drive. The Windows OS will not open any CHM file on a network drive (unless the network drive is specially configured to be "trusted").

(b) Do not open it in the downloaded zip file directly. (Some Windows allow you to browse a zip file and open files in it as if it is a directory.) Unzip it to a separate file first.

(c) Do not put the CHM in a directory with path like "C#" or "C++" or any name that contains non-alpha characters. Some Windows CHM viewers have a bug and will not work with these kind of directories. For testing, just put the file in the root of the hard disk.

Please kindly let me know if the above can solve the problem.

Regards
Peter Kwan

Unblocking the file did the trick - thanks!
