Help with Zoom and Scroll Demonstration. |

At the moment I have 2 problems with this type of graph, the first is that the data I have in my oracle database are not displayed and the second is that I can use the update chart button, the zoom in and zoom out options without getting this error message. http://i55.tinypic.com/2v3orhc.jpg

Hi Nacho,
Please change:
$date01[]=$nrows[3];
to:
$date01[]=chartTime2($nrows[3]);
If the above still does not the problem, please change your SQL query to:
$query="select data_01,data_02, data_03, unix_time(data_date) from table_data where id_source='xxxx' order by data_date ";
In the above, 'xxxx' is a id_source that you know exist. (For testing, please do not use a variable for xxxx, just to verify that the SQL query works if the id_source is correct.)

Hi Peter.
I did that and works, thank you a lot. But I'm still having problems with the zoom, when I'm trying to make a Zoom-In, Zoom-Out, Drag or set manually the date I got this error message.. "Error 500 accessing server." I don't see where is the problem. Would you like to help me?

Hi Peter.
Well I was editing your code and I can"solve" the problem about Zoom..... but... I got another problem... In the code below, after to example code, I could solve the problem about the zoom but I created another problem, when I am zooming the chart, the browser starts to consume a lot of resources and the browser stops responding until it finishes to zoom. I need to chart between 10000 and 20000 data depending on the ID.
For example:
ID_Source='4033' , 4033 has 10988 records If I edit your code like this:

I can make zoom on the chart but the browser die.
How can I solve this?

Hi Nacho,
ChartDirector can plot 20000 points very quickly. However, your browser may not be able to handle 20000 hot spots and tooltips for the data points. So your browser becomes slow. (Most browsers will have difficulty handle that amount of hot spots and tooltips.)
Also, because the plot area of your chart is only 520 pixels wide, it is not useful to plot much more than 520 points. The points just overlap and blocks each others, and you cannot see most of the points anyway.
(It is easier to see the issue if you consider more extreme cases - would it be useful to plot 1000000 points on a line chart that is 100 pixels wide? In general, for a line chart, it is not useful to plot much more data points than the number of horizontal pixels on the chart.)
Would you mind to clarify if you really need to "plot" 10000 to 20000 points, given that the 520-pixel chart is not capable of display them anyway?
If you have a large number of data values to be represented on a line chart much smaller than the number of values, it is suggested you may aggregate the data first before passing the data to ChartDirector. This is usually achieved easily by using an aggregate SQL query, so no additional code is really needed, and you just need to modify the SQL.
In the original sample code, we use random numbers and not SQL, so we have added the "if (count($date01) >= 520)" code to aggregate the data. If you use SQL to aggregate the data, then there is no need to use the "if (count($date01) >= 520)" code. Of couse, you can still use the "if (count($date01) >= 520)" code if you do not want to use SQL to aggregate the data for some reasons.
The "if (count($date01) >= 520)" basically aggregates the data to less than 520 points if the data is originally more than 520 values. We choose 520 because it is the size of the plot area.
The aggregation method in the sample code is averaging. You can also use other aggregation method (like max/min, sum, etc). It depends on the nature of your data.
As an example, I have included 3 sample charts for your reference. The first chart is plotted with 50000 points. The second chart is plotted with the same data, but aggregate to 1000 points using the average method. The last chart is plotted using the max/min aggregation method (aggregate into a max data series and a min data series, then plot two lines and fill the region in between - this essentially plots the envelope of the data) with 1000 points in each line.
So in summary, for your case, you may:
(a) Aggregate the data into less than 1000 points or to a value more closely match to your chart size, to avoid overloading your browser. You may freely choose the aggregation method to use.
(b) If you insist on plotting 20000 points, you may want to remove the image map to avoid overloading your browser with hot spots. (Remove the line with getHTMLImageMap and the line with setImageMap.)
