Dragging ChartDirector into the 21st Century |

First of all I have to say I love ChartDirector and I always recommend it to clients but the sell is getting tough. The api documentation, support and flexability of the software is first rate and I have no complaints. However, it needs a serious makeover. The website looks like it was coded in the 90's and is frankly embarrassing. Likewise with the graphics(guages) and examples shipped with the product. Unless you guys get on the ball and drag CD into the 21 century, I'm afraid you will not be around for much longer which would be a shame. Seriously guys it's 2010, how hard would it be to redo the website using a CMS like Drupal, Wordpess or ExpressionEngine. Also, better support or even awareness of the MVC architecture would be good. |

Hi Pman,
Thanks a lot for your valuable comment. We will take this comment very seriously. We will work hard to improve the look and feel of the charts and our web site.
We are confident we will be still be around for a long long time.
Concerning the MVC architecture, ChartDirector does work with MVC, and a lot of people are using ChartDirector with MVC. It is true that we have not included sample code for MVC in most editions of ChartDirector. The main issue that everyone seems to be using a different MVC. We had been tempted to include examples using the Struts MVC framework in the Java edition of ChartDirector, but then we found out there are a lot other MVC frameworks in use. Currently, the only MVC framework sample code we have is based on the Ruby On Rails frameworks, which seems to be the standard in the Ruby world.
If you have any suggestion on the MVC framework, please let me know.
Regards

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the quick response. Seeing that all MVC frameworks follow the same methodology, I do not think choosing any particular MVC framework is all that important. However, if I had to choose it would be Struts for Java and CodeIgnitor for PHP.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think a more important issue than the MVC framework examples are simply updating the current examples. When I show clients the working samples they are not impressed because they look dated and ugly with garish colors. eg.

Love the icons on the "Business Results" chart btw. They look like they pre-date the "2001" date on the chart. Then I have to explain to them that CD gives them near total control over the presentation of the charts and they can look any way they wish. For example your new Pyramid charts are quite attractive and modern looking.

The web site is a another matter. My god there is even a "mailto" link at the bottom of every page. lol. Sorry to go on about it but you put out such a great product, you website should reflect that fact. You should seriously think about using a modern CMS like Drupal to redo the site.
In any event I really hope you make these changes because CD is a fantastic product and it deserves a better stage. |
