  Area or Volume of Pyramid/Cone/Funnel
Posted by Wes on Sep-16-2011 05:03
Just trying out 5.0 today.  I have a bit of feedback about one of the new features:

When plotting these charts, it appears that the linear distance is used to determine the slices of the chart.

It would be nice if an option could be provided to have the slices done by by area (in 2d) or volume (if rotated and elevated /3d).  This way a 50% - 50% pyramid would have a thin base and a taller top, and both of the volumes would be equivalent.  This is handy when looking at those top 5% kinda charts as the top is still visible, although the volume compared to the base is much smaller.

This scaling can be reversed engineered before being fed into ChartDirector, and then custom labels used to put in the correct values, and I just thought it would be nice to have either another chart that did volumetric pyramids/codes/funnels or an option provided on the current objects.

By the way, love the surface charts.

Cheers,
-W

Hi Wes,

Thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions. We will consider it in future versions of ChartDirector.

At the time we developed the pyramid charts, we had already recognized that a 50% - 50% pyramid, if splitted by height, would be somewhat confusing, as the top segment would look smaller than the bottem segment by volume.

However, splitting by volume was also confusing. For a 50% - 50% split, the top segment would occupy almost 80% of the height. We thought most people would intuitively think the top portion was much larger than the bottom portion.

After surveying the Internet on how these charts were drawn, we found that the customary way of drawing these charts was to split by height. That's why we implemented these charts to be splitted by height.

Anyway, I think it may be nice if we can include an option to split the pyramid in other ways.

Again, thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions.

Good to know someone is listening.

As I mentioned, we've already worked out a volumetic calculation for the pyramid chart.
ChartDirector's flexibility is one of its greatest strengths.

If you are open to suggestions, another great feature would be treemapping

Thanks again,

Hi Wes,

Again, thank you very much for your valuable suggestion. Quite a number of users have suggested Treemaps to us, so this feature is currently of high priority in our wish list.
