Hi Guy,
Yes. ChartDirector is still being actively developed.
The next version of ChartDirector (tentatively called Ver 5.1) hopefully can be released in Q3, 2011. The main feature in this version is a "programmable cursor tracking interface".
When the user moves the cursor across the chart, there can be tracking dots and/or a vertical line and/or a horizontal line that tracks the cursor. The information of the mouse cursor position, and all data points on that x-position can be displayed on the chart. The display position can be on the chart legend, as a floating box tracking the cursor, on the axis, etc.. The interface is programmable and highly customizable to meet various needs.

Hi James,
Sorry for the seriously delay for this new release.
The binaries for this release is essentially completed. But what is still dragging is the sample code and documentation. We should be able to start releasing it in Feb 2012.
(The release timing for different editions of ChartDirector may be different by up to a month. We may not update our web site until all editions are released.)

Now that version 5.1.1 has been out for well over a year what are the plans for the next release? What new features and so on ???? |

Hi Ray,
The next release will be ChartDirector 6.0. Some of the main features are:
- Enhanced interaction support, including for SVG (HTML 5) and mobile devices. For
example, the programmable track cursors and drag to zoom/scroll will support SVG /HTML 5
and touch based user interface.
- Examples to demonstrate integration with other frameworks such as ASP.NET AJAX and
MVC, JSF, JQuery, etc.. While ChartDirector has always been able to work with these
frameworks, there are often "quirks" that the developer would need to aware of. For
example, ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel does not support inline Javascript, so any
ChartDirector sample code that use inline Javascript would need to be modified if they are
to be loaded using an UpdatePanel.
- Direct PDF output support
- Facelift for gauges and meters
- True 3D bar chart (with 3D rotation and perspective support just like 3D surface chart)
- Many other graphics improvements, such as bar chart and box chart with rounded bars /
boxes, candlestick charts with hollow/filled style support, symbol offset support,
coutour/surface color specification in terms of data values, etc......

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the feedback. All of this great to hear:)
As an aside, concerning pdf output, it this intended to be a raster format embedding pdf output, say png, or do you intend to embed some of the output vector-based information, say text, as vectorial information within the pdf output.

Hi Daniel,
It will be in native PDF vector format. I have attached a few test PDFs generated by the
next version of ChartDirector (which is still in development) for your reference.

Hi Peter
This is a great piece of news. Thanks for the test pdfs that you provided as attachment. They definitely scale in a great way. Looks quite clean!
Looking forward to your announcement in due time. No hurry on my side. Just great to discover this great piece of functionality in Chartdirector:)

Would also love to get true 3d bar charts; would you please update on 6.0 schedule; thank
you.

Hi Chris,
We are in the process of developing the sample code and the documentation right now. I
expect version 6.0 will be available in this quarter.
Unluckily, the true 3D bar chart feature will not be available in 6.0. Instead, we will have an
additional "view port control" to enhance user interaction, and much improved mobile phone
support for web usage.

Hi Peter,
In the new version, will it be easier to draw interactively on web based (asp.net) finance
charts? Right now, as I understand this is possible in the current version, but you have to
place a canvas over the chart, capture the mouse events on the browser and re-draw the
lines on the server side. What would be really helpful is to have a sample project either in
it's current or future form.
I need my users to draw interactively on the chart and also record the x, y values of the
lines drawn. I've read a lot of forum posts of other users attempting to achieve the same
functionality, but with either little success or not wanting to share the code with the
community.
Also, are you still planning on releasing version 6 this quarter?
Thanks,
Travis |

Hi Travis,
Yes. We are planning to release version 6 this quarter.
Unluckily, in the new version, there would not be new features for interactive drawing.
For interactive drawing, you would need any interface to allow the user to select what to
draw (text or lines or other things), to actually draw them (eg. by dragging on the chart),
and to edit the drawings (select the drawn items, move the end points, delete the items,
edit colors, fonts, line styles, z-order, and so on), and to save and load and print the
drawings. Basically, it would be like a mini "Photoshop" type of feature.
In my opinion, the interactive drawing is best implemented as a separate "mini Photoshop"
component. In this case, ChartDirector generates the chart, and then the chart is loaded
into the "mini Photoshop" for editing.
If you can find some code for web based interactive graphics and image editing, you may be
able to use it with ChartDirector to achieve what you need.

Hi KarenA,
We have already completed the .NET edition, and is porting it to C++ right and developing
the sample code and documentation right now. We expect it to be available in Mar 2015.

It looks like the release schedule has slipped. Is there a new target date for the release?
Thanks,
