Are Multiple data sets in a scatter chart allowed? |

My basic question is: Are Multiple data sets in a scatter chart layer allowed or does the use of scatter chart type mean only one data set?
I am trying to build up some complex symbols (in fact roadway paths as polygons from another post) and I have Peter's prior fragment working (many thanks) but as I try and do "different" symbols for each path I need, I am confused as to if I need multiple layer (with only one data set allowed for each) or can in fact add additional data sets (thus assigning all the polygon paths as a symbol for each data set).
[Aside: For this solution each data set consists on a single data point. As all data points in the data set share the custom symbol, I can not just assign a unique draw area (symbol) to each point as far as I can tell, this mornings adventure]
The single layer solution is preferred because then I can move the resulting single layer about in the front-back order, the alternative means I may have a few dozen layers to manage one at a time. |

Hi DC Kelley,
Yes. Whereas you can use multiple data sets in a scatter layer, all the data sets must share the same x-coordinates. So it may not be useful for your case. For your case, you probably need to use multiple scatter layers.
The intention for having multiple data sets per layer is to allow the data to be "combined" in various ways - eg. to be stacked up in a stacked bar chart. That is why each data set can only has different y-coordinates, and must share the same x-coordinates of the layer.
