Not able to copy chartdir.lic to C:\\Program Files\\ChartDirector\\lib
Posted by Mark Weaver on Jan-03-2012 05:39
I am migrating my installation from Windows XP to Windows 7.  The installation appears to work but I am unable to copy chartdir.lic file to either...
- c:\\program files\\chartdirector\\lib\\ or
- c:\\program files\\chartdirector (x86)\\lib\\

I receive an ACCESS DENIED.

The ID does have administrator privileges.

How do I resolve this issue to remove the yellow banner?

Hi Mark,

In Windows 7, even if you are using an account with administrator privileges, by default, the privilege is disabled. To exercise the privilege, you would need to run the program with "Run As Administrator" (right click on the program icon, and select "Run As Administrator). For example, if you are using the DOS shell to copy files, you must start the DOS shell using "Run As Administrator". If you are opening the license file with Notepad, and use "Save As" to save the file to "c:\\program files\\chartdirector (x86)\\lib\\", you would need to start the Notepad using "Run As Administrator".

Some Windows 7 programs, such as the File Explorer, can automatically detect that it lacks the administrative privilege to perform its job, and automatically ask you for the  administrative privilege. I have attached a screen shot of what happens when I use the File Explorer to copy a file to "c:\\program files\\chartdirector\\lib\\". It will pop up with a box that says "Destination Folder Access Denied". But then it will ask for the administrator permission. If you press the "Continue" button (which means you grant the permission to the File Explorer), the File Explorer will successfully copy the file.

For more details, please refer to Microsoft Windows documentation.

Hope this can help.
